Unless youre downloading through a corperate network, those drives shouldnt be writing alot.

Heh, so do I. 3mbit is roughly 360kb/s, my 5400rpm drive maxes out at 8mbytes a second and its not on a raid array. Just some info for you, you internet speed shouldnt max out your drive that much.

im not saying its maxing the drive out
but that its writeing to it every second
this is totally un needed and puts alot of strain on the hd mechanism (its writeing 24 hours a day 7 days a week

it could quite easily write the data every 10 mins or so

8MB/s zerokun? must be an oldy indeed, my drive does 40MB/s unbuffered and 85MB/s buffered (WD sata 7200RPM)

Just saying you would bennefit from an update.

Reading and writing to your drives causes almost no wear and tear; the heads move by magnetics, not by a motor. You should learn how harddrives work. What about the wear and tear of the platters spinning around? Maybe they should stop every second to take a rest.

They can thrash all they want and it shouldn't kill it any faster than normal use. Not to say thrashing is good, however.

Re-reading your post, let me append: writing out every second isn't "thrashing."
