What is the difference between the connections local and remote? How does each work and what are the benefits?

I've been going through the groups and I see people talking about the different connection types but I have been unable to under stand what they mean. If someone could shed some light on this topic I am sure it will benefit more people then me.

Local/Remote just is whether the connection was initiated locally or remotely. BitTorrent can send and receive data on either type of connection. The only thing is if a peer that is firewalled is trying to connect to another peer that is firewalled, the connection won't happen and both the firewalled peers will not be able to send/receive data to/from each other no matter how much bandwidth they have to offer to each other. So people who don't have their bittorrent ports open or forwarded will miss out on any bandwidth that any other people who also don't have their bittorrent ports open or forwarded have to offer.
