I have a file of this type -. it says to mount on desktop and open but window doesn't recognize the file type. Can anyone help please?

That's a Macintosh Image File, so you will need a Mac.
Possibly it will work on windows if you rename it to iso and try to mount/burn it with your favourite program.

I tried renaming it to iso and running it through daemon but that didnt work.Is there any other way of getting it to work?

You have to find someone with a Macintosh, who converts the Mac image to an ISO image format using Disk Copy or extract/burn it on the Mac directly.
