It's the usual issue with port forwarding, but I can't seem to get it to work. I disable Windows XP firewall before I start, just so I know that that isn't the problem (I can turn it on after I get my router sorted and then have problems with that )

I have a very obscure router it seems (I'm in the UK by the way). I can't see any model, but I know its a conexant. I've got to the place where I can adjust port settings and allow port forwarding, and in the manual it offers this advice:

Quote:
3.3.8 Configuration - Virtual Server

The Virtual Server Configuration page allows the user to set the configuration of Virtual Server. The Conexant firmware includes the Free BSD version firewall. All UDP/TCP ports are protected from intrusion. If any specific local PCs need to be mapped to the UDP/TCP port on WAN side, please input the mappings here.

Public Port: This field allows the user to enter the port number of the Public Network.

Private Port: This field allows the user to enter the port number of the Private Network. In most cases, the private port number is same as public port number.

Host IP Address: This field allows the user to enter the private network IP address for the particular sever.

So I have to input a "public port - start", which is 6881 right? Then a "public port - end", which I put as twenty above 6881, as this is as many as is allowed. Then "private port"...no idea what this is really so I put in 6881 like I'm told to. I find my IP address through Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig (it's 10.0.0.8, the same IP address I put in to access the settings in my router). Port type is set as TCP...

And it doesn't work! I use http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl to check the connection, and...nothing. Bit Torrent won't download anything. (Well, I might get a rate of maybe 400bps when I know my ADSL connection runs at about 110kbps!)

Am I doing something wrong? If so, can you tell me what!! This is starting to irritate me a bit now...

Cheers guys

For some reason my username isn't working but for future reference my name's badgerer...

Another thing...I just spotted the ability to set NAT settings...I know this can have problems with Bit Torrent right? At the moment it's enabled, and the mode is "Dynamic NAPT".

The problem is that 10.0.0.8 is a private IP address, and as such non-routable. You want to use your public IP address (that's the one your router was assigned by your ISP's DHCP server).

Just leave the IP address field blank, and if that doesn't work use a service like whatsmyipaddress.com to figure out what your *public* IP address is.

HTH.

I've tried this with no joy...my IP address seems to change every time I reset the router to apply the port forwarding settings...I assume this means I have to make my IP address remain the same? Any idea how to do this?
