First off I would like to thank theSHADOW for BT, I have been a loyal user since 2005 or so. I love the simplicity of it!
I've looked all over the net for a solution to this port triggering phenomenon, but no one really nails it. Most people just say " Port forwarding is recommended anyways, so just use that instead." Wow that really helps alot huh?
Anyhow, this is a VERY brief guide to use port triggering for BitTornado:
1) If your router specifies, make sure you choose TCP, because bit torrent does not use UDP!
2) For "Trigger Ports," "Trigger Port Range," or anything sounding like that, just put in port range of " 10000-60000"
3) For "Forwarded Ports," "Forwarded Port Range," or anything sounding like that, put in port range of "10000-60000" these are the same port range as the "Trigger Ports."
4) Make sure you configure Bit Tornado (in the "Prefs" tab) to use any ports inside the 10000-60000 range! And disable "UPnP," which is also an option inside the "Prefs" of Bit Tornado.
Q: why is the trigger range the same as the forwarding range?
A: because I can't seem to find Bit Tornado's trigger port, which some people on the net claim to be port 6969, but i've tried with no luck. Using logic along with trial and error, i figured that the trigger port is somewhere inside the 10000-60000 range for Bit Tornado, which when triggered will open the correct forwarded port(s), which is also inside the 10000-60000 range!
Q: why is the port range SO HUGE?? Wouldn't that leave a vulnerability to an attack(s) ?
A: This is the beauty of port triggering my friends, only the port used will be opened during triggering, all the other 49999 ports ARE CLOSED. When you close Bit Tornado, that previously opened port will close! Remember, each Bit Tornado client u have running at once uses 1 port. So if you have 10 BT clients running at once, u need 10 ports!
Q: Is this be guide recommended for basic port forwarding?
A: ABSOLUTELY NOT. Basic port forwarding follows slightly different rules. If you forward all 10000-60000 ports in basic port forwarding, that means ALL THOSE PORTS ARE OPEN ALL THE TIME. If you do this you are asking to be owned, so don't do it.
Hope I clarified a couple of things for people. feel free to let me know if I left anything out.
