Simple, open BitTornado multiple times.

Or you can use BitTornado's sister client ABC, which is BitTornado with a different GUI.

If using the console ncurses or headless client, is it more resource efficient to have a single instance of bittornado running or multiple instances?

I ask because I like to organize my torrents into folders and then launch the ncurses client in each directory.

What I find is when there are large torrents in each directory, hash checks take a very long time. Perhaps large amounts of paging is taking place or the client simply cannot get enough RAM to run the hash check. If it were a single client then it would obviously be able to manage it's own resources and not hash check multiple files at the same time (probably the most resource intensive operation).

The only benefit might be the ability to handle the occasional client crash without stopping all torrents. Although, having multiple ncurses clients consuming all of the RAM might be what's causing the crashing (still very rare).

I am using a Slackware Linux machine with a P2 300 Mhz and ~320 MB of RAM.
