Nothing ever from this site ever had spyware/adware. If you have them, you got them from somewhere else. Certain viruses "activate" when programs are installed to "replicate" itself. I've seen this on other computers and they're completely un-removable ><. Even with Symantec's removal tools they'd come back after a reboot.

If it's spyware that won't die, even though AdAware and other apps try to kill it, it might be CWS. Go here for more info.

Anyone who blames the last change they made for a given problem without being thorough is a dumbass. Sometimes a failure may be delayed.

I got this about a week ago. Same thing, but it didn't come with Bit Tornado. It installed a crap load of ad software.

It looks like the ad program got through a browser vulnerability. Norton popped up with a message, but by the time Norton figures out something is a virus or trojan, it's already too late.

Anyway, the worm latches on to a bunch of exe files. I had it replace notepad.exe, regedit.exe, ipconfig.exe, and a bunch of other exe's on my computer. Everytime I ran one of the infected exe's, it would reinstall a crapload of ad programs, purityscan, optimizer, 180solutions... and try replacing other exe's with itself.

Norton, Spybot, Ad-Aware... everything I ran only found the ad programs, not the replaced exe's, so later I would run some program and all the ad programs would be reinstalled. I finally had to do a search for all exe's newer than a couple weeks ago and delete and replace them all with known good.

It's certain that the original posters exe got hijacked by this ad program after he downloaded it.

Hey, I heard on another forum *sry no link* that there are now spywares that act as a time-bomb. they float in on another program and wait for another to be installed to pin it on that program. It has happened to me and it might be what is happening to you! These are all removable by Spybot's or Ad-aware's latest updates (both of which I use), but you might have to actually find the file that has attached it-self to BitTornado. So, BitTornado is adware free! It might be something you installed 10 mins - 30 days earlier but it is definatly not BitTornado.

and on the Java thing.....Java is MOSTLY a total waste of space....but it has helped us so you have to give it a LITTLE bit of credit.

Just a note to everyone out there not sure if this has been covered but a lot of spyware apps that sit on ur box without you knowing activate url redirections when you click on certain links so you might be coming here and clicking on the download link but you might be being redirected to an bad site containing a version of this software thats been implanted with spyware... because of the problems with using IE at the moment its just not a safe browser to use for this kinda thing (or anything if you want your personal information keeped safe!). I strongly reccomend people switching browsers to Opera or Firefox/Mozilla or anything else for that matter as long as its not IE. Just my 2p.

There has been a problem with websites performing "drive-by" downloads of programs such as Xupiter. I don't know about all the spy/adware that has been mentioned here but you can get these kinds of programs by going to a website and not clicking on a single link. Just going there is enough.

On a related note... you can get a virus by just being connected to the internet. You don't have to DO anything. Just being connected and unprotected is enough.

Another thing... NEVER download ANYTHING from a popup. Even a BitTorrent client. You never know what you'll get. If you need a program then go find it yourself. Don't let an advertisement tell you you need it and that they have the best one. You'll regret it.

No program is perfect and the more common the program is the more likely someone will find a flaw that can be exploited. There is no exception. Doesn't matter what OS, browser or email client you use. It has a flaw somewhere. The biggest issue with M$ is that most of the world uses their stuff so when a flaw is discovered and a way to exploit that flaw is developed the results are far more widespread.

I guess the point of this is... of all the versions of TheSHAD0W's client I've installed I've never seen a virus or spy/adware get installed with it.

Anyone who says Shadow's clients downloaded from his site have spyware needs to get off the computer because you obviously don't know jack shit. Here, try this. If you still have your copy of BT, and think it is infected and/or if you don't have it anymore, download it again from the main page. Then go to these sites. All of these are reputable online scanners. All of them will scan for viruses, and some of them will scan for trojans and spyware. Remember, just scan what you downloaded. Don't actually install them. The unpackers from these scanners will be able to pick out any malware within them.

***NOTE*** some of these will use an ActiveX installer to run the web based scan. If you do not want to do this, only use numbers 1 and 2. They allow you to upload a single file to their server to test. Numbers 3 - 8 require you to use their ActiveX installer to run.***

1> http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/ this one actually scans with multiple different engines so it is VERY comprehensive.

2> http://www.kaspersky.com/remoteviruschk.html Kaspersky was included in the first link, but I will list it's own site anyway. Kaspersky is one of the best scanners out there for not only viruses but also trojans. They now scan for some types of spyware as well. Other companies say they scan for all these things, but Kaspersky is the only one that I have actually seen catch them.

These below require you to install the web based scanner. You will need to have JavaScript and ActiveX enabled in order to use these. I would say remember to turn them back off afterwards, but the people who were complaining obviously wouldn't know what I was talking about since chances are that they got the malware from clicking yes to install crap from shady porn sites and their ilk anyway. For anyone else who knows about such things, but wind up using these, remember to disable JavaScript and ActiveX afterwards.

3> http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp McAfee is often bashed because of incompatibility issues, especially by Norton groupies  . But, McAfee is widely accepted as a very good virus scanner, even by people who don't like their products.

4> http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml F-Secure is not very widely known outside of the computer security field, but they are oftentimes the fastest company to respond to new virus outbreaks.

5> http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Trend Micro is one of the top 3 antivirus companies.

6) http://www.ravantivirus.com/ RAV was recently bought by Microsoft, and have one of the most extensive virus databases out there.

7> http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ I personally don't like Panda's AV's. But they do have a decent track record for detection.

8> security.symantec.com/ default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym And of course, Norton which I personally hate now since they seem to be getting farther away from good scanning and service every year. Just more bloat added with each new product they put out...

Another good site to visit is PC PitStop http://www.pcpitstop.com/ You should check out their forums since anyone saying they have spyware on their computers needs some lessons for online safety.

After checking the file at those sites, maybe you will finally see that you didn't get the spyware from Shadow's client.

hey i got that shit on my pc too, and i use bittornado constantly
ive also got a rash on my.....ahem
i wonder is there a connection
just kidding, the fact is its more likely to have been caused by something you downloaded throught the client than the actual client

180solutions is a pretty nasty piece of spyware , i had to go into the registry files many times to get rid of it and its cohorts
i use spybot and adware but they were only a temporary solution

good luck man, after a few hours i was able to get thinngs back to normal
i did have to reinstall internet explorer tho

If you download the BT client from the official site, there should be no spyware or adware. My suggestion to those of you that have recieved unwanted files added to your computer is to get a good program to get rid of them and re-download the client. Oh, and you might want to stay away from those 'naughty' sites as well.

I really don't know why everybody is being so rude to all the people reporting spyware. Have you considered that maybe there's a piece of spyware that spoofs the file, since it's probably a pretty popular d/l?
