Because many people still aren`t using rar/ace to pack .bin/.iso etc which benefit a lot from a good squishing! :)

Yes I know it isn`t BitTorrents fault but it would help since what with it`s error checking and the nature of seeding an existing torrent, one can`t really help reduce bandwidth requirements by packing each .bin etc unless reseeding. :(

Still, like I said, it is the original seeders fault for not squishing certain files tho.

It depends on the content of the ISO whether on-the-fly compression would be beneficial. If the content is XVID, you won't see any benefit from compression. Same for RAR files. There will be great benefit (maybe 25% savings) on PDF eBooks. But it seems like most popular torrents are movie and videos so on-the-fly compression would not be useful for many people.
