Singapore is just such a screwed up country...

I am currently using Singnet 512kbps connection and my dl speed is an average of 1-2kb/s while I can upload up to 30kb/s (which is my max if I did not calculate wrongly)... This is just so wrong. I am dling at a speed which is even more pathetic than 56k dial-up users, where I have to take days just to get a 200+mb file!

This just sucks so much... My dl speed was at 50-60kbps a few weeks ago and now the dl speed is totally pathetic. I tried changing a variety of port numbers but they all just don't work. Anibodi using the same connection as me can suggest to me a port range which they tried and worked well?

BTW, I asked a few of my friends who are using Starhub Maxonline if they are facing the same problem and they say their BTs are working fine. Starhub isn't limiting their dl speed animore. Make me feel like changing to Starhub but my contract still last for 1 and a half years. Waah! Stupid Singnet...

ya, me on 512 also affected...best times are past midnight till 4 pm...

to Sg users, complaining to Singnet wun help:

I refer to your email dated 7/21/05 regarding peer-to-peer speed.

I wish to clarify that SingNet has no control over the performance of
the speed with peer-to peer (P2P) software.
The P2P connection/transfer speeds are also sometimes due to overseas
routing delays/congestion. Unfortunately, such delays are usually
beyond the control of SingNet.

In order to gauge the download throughput speed, you can run the speed
test from SingNet website.
Click on the 'FTP' button and wait for the process to complete. This
result will measure the actual download speed of your connection.

If your PC is running on WinXP SP2, it could cause slowdown of P2P
downloads as well.

A connection rated at 512 kbps is 512 kilo-bits per second.

The 50-60 speed values as reported in BitTornado are Kilo-BYTES/ pse second.

However there is something crippling the connection either at the ISP, on your computer, at the ISP's ISP, or connections in between computer and ISP if you're only getting 1-2 KB/sec on well-seeded torrents.

Bit Tornado 0.3.7 Windows 2000

My download speed gets up to 800KBytes per second but actually it grinds to a halt. I'm suspicious of either the tracker so some faulty peer. I've used BT for nearly 12 months with no experience like this ever before.

It may be unique to the torrent that I am downloading. Has anyone had this problem as well.

It can be corrected if I open up a browser and do some surfing and that then begins the process of correcting the download speed to the actual throughput. But I can't stay up all night surfing just to keep my download happening at reasonable speeds.

any ideas?

i work in the media industry and am currently following this story, download problems, in the us they are trying to pass a law to make file sharing programs illegal, ie..if it is on your computer you are guilty and will be fined, the problem lies in this. isp hosts are choking bandwith on any computer that is not hosting a site, or is pulling a lot of incomming bits, this is how they find the file sharers and choke them out. the law has not yet passed but from my info it will eventually. right now they are using this as a deturant for sharers.
good luck with the fight

I'm sure something fishy is going on. I just converted from sympatico in ontario, canada and my download speeds don't reach past 15kb/s and my uploads the same. The new connection I have is cable. The old was DSL. The connection I have now is twice as fast as my DSL connection that would reach around 300kb/s on torrents easily. I'm on a 70 peer, 15 seed torrent and I'm actually not downloading at all... I can download fine on the internet but this shit is just pathetic. I haven't tried mirc yet, but I'm sure that's fine.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft, Assistant Attorney General Christopher A. Wray, and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Kenneth L. Wainstein today announced the first federal enforcement action taken against criminal copyright piracy on peer-to-peer networks. Early this morning, federal agents executed six search warrants at five residences and one Internet service provider in Texas, New York, and Wisconsin, as part of an investigation into the illegal distribution of copyrighted movies, software, games, and music over peer-to-peer networks. Agents seized computers, software, and computer-related equipment in the searches.

“Today’s enforcement action is the latest step in our ongoing effort to combat piracy occurring on the Internet,” said Christopher A. Wray, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division. “This is the first federal law enforcement action against criminal copyright infringement using peer-to-peer networks and shows that we are committed to combating piracy, regardless of the medium used to commit these illegal acts.”

The maximum penalty for criminal copyright infringement in violation of Title 17, United States Code, Section 506 and Title 18, United States Code, Section 2319, for a first-time offender is five years incarceration and a fine of $250,000.

Hey guys,

Im a starhub maxonline2000 user. My speed is super slow (around 1-5kB/s) on my Bit Tornado. (even with lots of seeders)

Ive done all the port forwading shit, and now the yellow light has turned in a green one, but it's still as slow.

Anyone using maxonline2000 can help me specifically with the bit settings and any other stuff to least improve my speed? i wld be grateful if the speed is even 20kB/s
