I use BTornado under linux, using the pure python scripts. Anyway, I have a problem, not just with Tornado, but all BT PY clients. When I close them down (CTRL+C), it takes an age for it to return control to the console. Is this normal?

Yes, it is; the client has to reconnect to the tracker to tell it you're shutting down, to both increase the efficiency of the torrent and to reduce the number of spurious connections you receive.
