I found BT hrroibly slow. SO far i've hit a MAX of 50kbps, but usually idol at around 10 - 20. Shareaza is my p2p of choice but again, can be horribly slow.

Next part: Is there a way to get better speeds out of BT? Seeing as i'm on cab;e (and therefore imaptient) waiting 20hrs for 1 game isn't to my liking. Or is it just the torrents i choose to use (suprnova, as I can't find anything else)

Please bear with me as i'm a Torrent noob.

50kbs is pretty good, for any file sharing network. I like Bit Torrent because I can keep a 50-70kbs most of the time depending on the torrent. To answer your question, are you getting a yellow light on your torrents? If you are, read the help on forwarding ports, fixing firewalls and such. Otherwise, there's not much you can do to speed things up. I think there are programs that can tweak the settings on your computer to speed things up, but I'm not sure how well they work and a lot of them are crammed with ad/spy/malware. You're on a cable line, so your connection will slow down if people in your neighborhood use the same cable company as you do for internet, and are online at the same time as you. I'd suggest letting your BT (and any file sharing program you have) run 24/7 if you can. This way you can take advantage of the times when no one else is on. I've also heard that some cable companies put caps on the downloads their users make, not sure if that would effect speed thought. It might be the torrents. I’ve never had a problem with nova, but always look see if you can find a few different torrents of the same file and see how many seeds/peers they have. Google for torrent sites and the name of the file followed by “torrent”. I once ran across a program called torrent searcher or something, but it was shareware and I couldn’t find a crack for it, so I don’t know how well the full version works. Lastly, how big are the games you're trying to download? A 700 MB takes me about 3h with BT( I haven't even seen KazaaLite go that fast). It shouldn't be taking you 20+h to get something like that. Patience is a prerequisite for using file sharing networks. I usually use eMule. If you think BT is slow, try that p. Lots of files, but slow as the kid who spends the whole class trying to figure out why he can’t write with the eraser end of the pencil. I hear DC is even slower though, so, meh.

Hmm, for some torrents, 50 KByte/s is good. I've had 531 KByte/s as my max before, I think it was a very popular one from REDACTED. Some of the smaller trackers are great, such as REDACTED, excellent community there. However, for the latest stuff at the best speeds, it would have to be Usenet. Granted, this is not P2P, but I max out my connection almost every time around 3.8 Mbit/sec (depending on servers), and it has ALL the latest stuff. Yes, it is very advanced to set up, and if your ISP doesn't have news servers you have to pay for good service, but Usenet gets over 100GB of uploaded data PER DAY! Say your ISP has 5 days of retention, or maybe you have Giganews with 45 days. Do the math, thats 500GB with ISP or 4.5 TB with Giganews of data that you can get at your line's cap! And new stuff every day! Excellent.

I don't know of any p2p programs that use UDP, and certainly none that use ICMP.

WinMX uses UDP, and soon to learn what ICMP is.

I have seen more on WinMX than kazaa lite, and on MX i get better speeds on my dial-up, usually 5 to 7 kbps. kazaa lite does have a few files i have been looking for thou.

Bit torrent has been good to me, decent speeds (usually 5k down and 2k up)

now, if a P2P program was written i just want a few things, good contol over what im sharing like winmx 3.54 beta 1, but bad IP blocks like kazaa lite, and speeds of bit torrent and winmx alike. just impliment those 3 into 1 massavely cool ad-free and spy-free program. oh and lets not forget, a way to block sharing of child porn, cause im tired of people downloading off me who are sharing that trash.

If I remember correctly, WinMX checks more sources than most of the others but sometimes the waiting list is so long that...yawn!!!

I agree with you---those are the pervs that attract attention to P2P and cause more trouble than any simple file sharing ---who the hell wants their kids to use P2P when those greasy monsters are pushing child porn under seemingly innocent titles sometimes or blatently obvious files--- they caused the first major investigations into p2p.

I will add another thing to your "wish list" and that would be that any file would automatically be checked for viruses, trojans, worms etc--- I hate waiting for a long download only to find that it's so full of crap that my antivirus can't fix it--- hours for nothing and then sometimes it's not even what it says it is.

I can't believe people still use Kazaa\Edonkey etc etc etc... Bit Torrent (any BT client) with PEERGUARDIAN is the safest way to go...As ive been informed...by far the quickest ive ever used.. Ive used everything from Napster to Imesh etc..etc.. Nothing I repeat nothing comes close to BT..

If everybody uses Bit Torrent(any BT client) speeds will increase

Nope nope, BitTorrent is NOT safe, even with PeerGuardian. Don't ever think that.

If it's free it's probably was some problem but who is to complain it's free. As for p2p they all have there limits. I have probably had the best results with limewirepro it's free when you download it from them.

If you want safe and fast downloads go with News Groups or IRC, IRC is not always fast but sometimes its blazingly fast. No p2p programs on earth are safe from RIAA or MPAA organisations if thats what you are referring to by: "Bit Torrent (any BT client) with PEERGUARDIAN is the safest way". I use Protowall with Blocklist manager to filter these organisations out from my PC and I know it can't stop all of them because no one knows all of these people's IPs from these organisations. Sure its better than nothing but it still don't remove the whole risk from being exposed. And as for viruses and trojans, you can have them everywhere, even from Microsoft's live update website.

For more info on internet security and Protowall: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/index.php

I think the best combo of p2p softwares are Shareaza and Bit Tornado, I use Shareaza as a last resort when I can't find what I'm searching for elsewhere. Shareaza is pretty nice though because I find alot of torrents there and most of the time they connect to tracker and the download completes with no problems. And Shareaza combines eDonkey with Gnutella and torrent which is pretty neat. I think if more peoples used Shareaza most of the downloads would go faster. Especially the ones coming from eDonkey networks because Shareaza downloads from gnutella/edonkey/torrent clients all at same time, it searches for more sources from everywhere. So, it has alot of potential, plus its free and no spyware/adware bundles.

I feel sorry for you guys averaging around 50kB/s or 150kB/s. I AVERAGE around 400kB/s. I will also hit my max around 780kB/s a couple times a week. No joke.

Perhaps we are getting the torrents from *different* locations.

BitTornado is still the best client IMO. I've tryed just about every other popular client out there.

dude ur so wrong about if other peeps in ur hood r on at same time it dont matter how many peeps r on i used to work for local cable servis in scotland it all depends on the cableing if its old egress can leak which cause bandwidth to leek there for slow connection there could be a 1000 peeps going to the 1 switch and it wont make a diffrence as of slow speeds on bt i connect at 240k+ with dsl it all depends on the torrent site u use and how many peeps r connected to the 1 file

I like bearshare. No adware/spywaree and its very user friendly. And has a better search than overnet.

Are you sure bearshare has no adware/spyware? Their own download page says the free version contains "bundled software" which is the typical term people like to use for spyware or adware without saying it.
