a P2P-amplified web page mirroring system

This sounds like something that would be useful for a site like Slashdot (which crashes half the sites it links to with massive page hits).

lol so true

a P2P-amplified web page mirroring system? This may be a solution against recent increases of DDoS attacks. Unless of course the h4x0rz simply attack the server broadcasting webpage information....

i guess this could indeed be made possible eventually....

How well could something like this work on a dynamic, database driven site? or would the idea only work well for static sites?

This would only be appropriate for static content, though you could use it to carry the static portion of a dynamic site.

Wouldn't it make updating the site a nightmare?

Depends on how intelligently you laid the site out.

Could you say any sites this would be ideal for?
Like a distributed network for SuprNova torrents?

Why do you folks always think of piracy first? :(

It'd be useful for anyone running a popular site with limited resources, much as BitTorrent is useful for anyone distributing popular content with limited resources. It would also have drawbacks similar to BitTorrent's, in that the initial source is easily discovered.

Well, SuprNova seemed to be one of the only sites where media isn't the main issue behind bandwidth. The mirrors are setup to balance the load of the torrents. What other legitimate sites would have benifits? News sites? Or maybe the websites that Fark and Slashdot link to?

Are you thinking a mozilla extension? As for the piracy, that's simple. We aren't people with jobs in IT, or a steady income. Folks who leap to piracy first generally don't have the money to buy the stuff in the first place, or don't have it available anywhere near them. University students, minors, people in other countries, whatnot. Changing the original would be fairly simple if it was a mozilla extension. Torrents tend to be used for large files, and so changing the files is a pain, because of the large sizes involved. But a website has maybe 10/20k per page+images, so changing content wouldn't be that hard. Also, the benefit wouldn't help unless everyone visiting the site used the extension, unless shadow's thinking of more stable mirrors, rather than traditional p2p(but these would activate when server load gets high, rather than always being on). By maintaining a connection between the servers, you could solve the problem of mirrors being seriously outdated. Be nice to know what you're thinking.

Why not just make Twink auto-update all the servers when the client updates the main server?

I'm thinking something like a special Twink upload/FTP program.

I could see it working... as for updates you'd have to just make it check the sites last update, and if there was an update download it and put it into effect... seems a pretty simple idea in the basics atleast.
